ABSTRACT FOR ARTICLES ON TROUBLED TEENS

What is a Troubled Teen?

The typical American teen is different today than they were 20 or even 30 years ago. Today's teens are barraged with temptations of every kind. The availability of drugs, acceptance of casual sex, gangs, pornography, etc. make it increasingly more difficult for a teen to focus on school work. Often times they get in over their heads unable to find a way out. Many teens drop out of school for some reason or another. Some drop out just because they see no light at the end of the tunnel and feel it impossible to even conceive of graduating. Teen help sometimes can seem so far away that many of today's youth have feelings of despair and hopelessness. Troubled teens are often looked down upon by staff and many students.

The teen most in need of encouragement is many times the one that is the most difficult to reach out to or befriend. Some teens are afraid to associate with a troubled teen for fear of losing association with their positive peers. This makes it difficult for the teen needing help to break the cycle they seem to be stuck in. Teachers in some cases will place a label on a difficult student which can stick with them through their entire education experience. The troubled teen begins to feel more hopeless knowing that he or she will begin each school year with a strike against them.
